Ronald Ophuis
FILTER: DESTRUCTIVE FORCES AT WORK
Historical events often loose their emotional impact, causing our empathy to grow stale while the stories disappear in a vacuum. Ophuis is trying to keep this wound open as to redeem his guilt about this void. He visits countries which are the decor of war, violence and suffering like Rwanda, Congo, Srebrenica and Iraq. In his work he takes no moral position, the viewer itself must be seen to relate to the painful scenes.

The mostly confrontational paintings of Ronald Ophuis deal with human behaviour under extreme conditions. Thus he implicates the viewer to become a responsive witness..
