FILTER: FINANCE AND ITS LOGICS
In Formwalt’s film Unsupported Transit (2011) we see in time-lapse photography the rise over a period of several years China’s first Special Economic Zone, Shenzhen. It provides a metaphor for the inability to make visible the ever-circulating capital flows in the financial world.
The stock exchange in Shenzhen, designed by Rem Koolhaas, is central to the video work In the light of Arc. This time, the camera goes in and registers an environment that paradoxically is increasingly characterized by a process of dematerialization. Now that stock market trading is completely steered by ingenious algorithms, the trading floor with its distinctive golden bell has only a ceremonial function.
