FILTER: VIOLENCE AND ITS COUNTERSTRIKES

With Other People Think Jaar draws our attention to a speech made by composer John Cage. In 1928, at age 50, Cage plead for silence, for the United States to be quiet: “…silence on the part of the United States, in order that we could hear what other people think, and that they don’t think the way we do, particularly about us”. The United States needed to listen to what other countries had to say. Jaar, who lives in the US, finds Cage’s words relevant today. The relationship between North and South America is just as unequal today as it was in 1928. Jaar reintroduced Cage’s words in 2012, the year Cage would be 100.
