FILTER: FINANCE AND ITS LOGICS

In the Netherlands, there are some 150,000 domestic workers who come from places such as the Philippines, Eastern Europe, Indonesia, Latin America and Ghana. We trust them with the keys to our homes and the care of our children. They are a key economic link in our society – and will remain so in the future: as the population ages, we will need them even more. But why are these people not treated as legitimate members of the workforce? Why do we not recognize household help as valid and respectable employment, and why are we blind to the fact that some 70,000 of these people are in the Netherlands without proper legal documentation?
