Wifi Light Painting (4)

Timo Arnall

FILTER: DATA AND SURVEILLANCE

We are not only surrounded by physical, observable architecture and infrastructure, but also by ethereal technological infrastructure that we cannot see. Wifi, GPS and cellular networks are the invisible materials and systems that facilitate our contemporary digital culture. But because we cannot see them, we cannot fully understand their meaning.

With The Immaterials Project, Timo Arnall aims make these systems visible.  Using among other things installations, films and photographs he brings the technological systems that surround us in view. To this end he uses light painting techniques to reveal the widespread presence of ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks, and he made a series of lamps that capture GPS satellite signals from outer space.
